The high-performance SUV is equipped with a plug-in hybrid powertrain for the first time, selling in versions of 644 horsepower and 738 horsepower.
In November 2021, the German luxury car brand introduced the concept of XM. According to BMW, XM builds on a new, independent platform, and is unlike other M models such as the M5 based on the 5 series. This is also the first BMW model to feature a plug-in hybrid powertrain (PHEV).
This PHEV, named M Hybrid, includes 4.4 V8 twin-turbo engine, produces 483 horsepower at 5,400-7,200 rpm; maximum torque reaches 650 Nm at 1,600-5,000 rpm. Power is transmitted to all 4 wheels through an 8-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission, Drivelogic, and M xDrive AWD. Rear-wheel drive includes an M Sport differential on the rear axle linked to DSC (Dynamic Stability Control).
The plug-in hybrid part of the powertrain takes the form of an electric motor integrated into the transmission, producing 194 hp and 280 Nm of torque. When combined, the gasoline engine and electric motor gives a total capacity of 644 horsepower and 800 Nm of torque.
The electric motor is powered by a 29.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack placed on the floor. It is charged via AC input (Type 2) with a charging capacity of 7.4 kW with a full charge time of 4.25 hours. If only running the electric motor, the XM can go 82-88 km, maximum speed is 140 km/h.
The XM can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 4.3 seconds, with a top speed of 250 km/h, or 270 km/h with the optional M Driver package.
In addition to the XM, BMW offers the XM Label Red, equipped with a V8 engine with a capacity of 577 horsepower, maximum torque stands at 750 Nm. The electric motor is similar to the standard XM version, for a total capacity of 738 horsepower and 1,000 Nm of torque. This version is slightly more powerful.
There are 4 driving modes such as Hybrid, Comfort, Sport, and Sport Plus. The car also has the option of running purely on electricity with EV or eControl mode. The M xDrive mode allows the selection of 4WD, 4WD Sport, and 4WD Sand.
BMW’s hybrid SUV is 5,110 mm long, 2,005 mm wide, 1,755 mm high, and has a wheelbase of 3,105 mm. It weighs 2,710 kg.
The highlight of the XM interior lies in the BMW curved screen with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch touchscreen in the center. These screens run on BMW 8 operating system. The car comes with many of the company’s highest safety features.
As planned, XM hybrid SUV will go into production from December at the Spartanburg plant in South Carolina, USA. The hybrid SUV will focus on three major markets such as the US, the Middle East, and China. Selling price has not been disclosed.
