In the midst of a global crisis and a pandemic that still hasn’t ended, with prices skyrocketing in nearly every sector, a car that reduces ownership stresses is worthy of being labelled anti-inflation, as Forbes did. The following list is published annually by Kelley Blue Book (KBB) – one of the largest car value assessment firms in the US.

The winners of each segment are as follows:

Small-sized sedan: Toyota Corolla Large-sized SUV: Nissan Armada
Mid-sized sedans: Honda Accord Premium small-sized crossover: Lexus UX
Large-sized sedan: Toyota Avalon Premium small-sized SUV: Lexus NX
Subcompact executive car: Acura ILX 2-row compact luxury crossover SUV: Lexus RX
Mid-size premium sedan: Volvo S90 3-row compact luxury crossover SUV: Acura MDX
Sports car: Subaru BRZ Premium large-sized SUV: Lexus LX
Hybrid: Toyota Corolla Hybrid SUV off-road: Ford Bronco
Electric car: Nissan Leaf Compact pickup truck: Ford Ranger
B-sized SUV: Hyundai Venue Full-size pickup truck: Toyota Tundra
C-sized SUV: Subaru Forester Minivan: Toyota Sienna
Mid-size 2-row SUV: Subaru Outback Premium electric: Tesla Model 3
Mid-size 3-row SUV: Subaru Ascent

Out of a total of the 23 ranked segments, Toyota wins 5 awards, while the Lexus sub-brand has been honored 4 times. Another Japanese brand, Subaru, also has four awards.

Honda is only named once, but the Acura sub-brand has two. Finally, Nissan also has two products. In total, brands from Japan take up to 19 awards.

Only one Korean model was named in the ranking, Hyundai Venue. However, the B-size SUV has been honored for the third year in a row.

The rest of the ranking includes a Swedish, Volvo S90, and three American models, two from Ford and one from Tesla.

KBB evaluates vehicle models using criteria such as depreciation, estimated fuel costs, maintenance and repair costs, insurance and financing, and other related costs. Based on the given rankings, consumers can estimate the expected cost of having to maintain a car for 5 years before deciding to buy a new car. One of the key criteria that greatly affects the cost of ownership is devaluation. That is, the more value a car model holds, the lower the cost of ownership, and vice versa. Or, another criterion that is temporary but has a significant impact on the assessment, is the cost of fuel. When fuel prices skyrocket, the lower a car’s fuel consumption, the more modest the cost of ownership.
