Kia CEOs supports producing additional pickup trucks, further adding competitiveness against Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger

02 Dec 2021

Kia CEOs in NA and Australian, famously known markets for their favor of pickup trucks, have all supported the idea of bringing in a new model for the segment.

In October, Kia Australia division CEO Damien Meredith revealed that he had repeatedly consulted with the Korean brand’s headquarters to develop a new pickup, but temporarily had no information. It is understandable that the CEO as well as the division is eager to push the company towards the idea as Kia sales are increasing in Australia, and the arrival of a pickup will further strengthen their position in the market.

The idea of making a pickup from Kia Australia was reiterated by another senior leader of the Korean brand. Specifically, design director Karim Habib told Autocar that he “always welcomes a new pickup with open arms” and thinks the addition “fits with the current lineup and brand philosophy as well as the trend of the US market”.

The 51-year-old Canadian chief understands the massive appeal of pickups in North America. His statement promises to give more hype to those who are eager to welcome a Kia pickup. Because the urban pickup segment already has Hyundai Santa Cruz, Kia pickups, if given the green light, will have to choose a different style, most likely a more traditional form similar to Toyota Hilux or Nissan Navara.

If launched in a hurry, Kia can completely consider borrowing the existing chassis of the Mohave SUV. The detached body structure of this vehicle is in line with the philosophy of using a “carrying horse” pickup, not to mention the company will not spend a lot of time and expense refurbishing the upper chassis for immediate use.
