Mercedes, a renowned German automaker, may not be the first name that comes to mind in Vietnam’s high-end electric vehicle segment. However, the company has been making remarkable strides in rapidly expanding its product offerings. In 2022, Mercedes introduced the EQS sedan, an electric car equivalent to its prestigious S-class, marking a significant step in its electric vehicle lineup. Building on this momentum, the brand is set to launch three new electric SUV models in the coming months: the EQS SUV, EQE SUV, and EQB.

The first of these models to hit the Vietnamese market will be the EQB, slated for release in July with an expected price tag of approximately 2.3 billion VND. The EQB, an electric version of the popular GLB series, which has been available in Vietnam since 2020, boasts a seven-seat configuration and an impressive range of 473 km on a single charge.

Following the EQB, Mercedes plans to introduce the EQS SUV and EQE SUV in July and September, respectively. The EQE SUV is expected to offer a range of approximately 550 km, while the EQS SUV will raise the bar with a range of 660 km on a full charge. Pricing and specific configurations for these models have yet to be disclosed. However, starting from June, customers will have the opportunity to pre-order Mercedes EQ SUV models, ensuring early delivery.

Until 2023, the only electric car model available from Mercedes in Vietnam was the EQS sedan, which was exclusively sold at three select dealerships in Hanoi, Da Nang, and Ho Chi Minh City. However, as part of the company’s strategy to expand its presence in the electric vehicle market, all 16 of its dealerships in Vietnam will begin selling Mercedes electric vehicles from mid-2023. Furthermore, Mercedes is actively installing a network of charging stations, not only at its dealerships but also at various 5-star hotels and resorts nationwide.

With its comprehensive lineup spanningacross four luxury electric vehicle segments, Mercedes has positioned itself as a leader in Vietnam’s electric car market. In comparison, competitors such as Porsche and BMW offer only one electric car line each, namely the Taycan and i7, respectively. These brands have yet to outline clear plans for introducing products in other segments. Notably, Porsche was the earliest entrant into the Vietnamese electric car market, commencing sales in 2020.

In conjunction with Audi’s plans to accelerate its presence in the electric vehicle segment in 2023, the company is finalizing preparations for the launch of a dedicated showroom for electric vehicles in District 7, Ho Chi Minh City. In April, Audi unveiled a luxurious lounge exclusively for electric vehicle owners at its showroom in the heart of District 1, Ho Chi Minh City.

Currently, Audi offers the Audi e-tron GT and e-tron SUV as its two pure electric models available in Vietnam. By the end of 2023, Audi aims to reintroduce the Q8 e-tron, a revamped version of its popular e-tron SUV, alongside a mid-life upgrade for its existing lineup.

Adding to the growing luxury electric car segment in Vietnam, Volvo has plans to bring back the C40 model in 2023. However, an exact release date has yet to be announced by the Swedish automaker.
