Recalling nearly 18,000 Hyundai Santa Fe in Vietnam due to seat belt defect

Santa Fe vehicles assembled in Vietnam (2021, 2022) have belt tensioners that operate incorrectly, causing unsafety for passengers.

Hyundai Thanh Cong, which is assembling and distributing Hyundai vehicles in Vietnam, is conducting a recall of 17,670 vehicles Santa Fe due to an issue related to the seat belt tensioner in the front seat. All vehicles involved in the recall are assembled domestically in 2021, 2022.

A belt tensioner is a device to roll the seat belt instantly when an impact has just occurred. It also keeps the driver and passengers from colliding with the components in the car.

According to the company, with Santa Fe vehicles are involved in the recall, when a collision occurs, the airbag fuse is activated, thus the pressure in the air generator of the front seat belt tensioner increases suddenly. In the event that the pipe pressure is overloaded, some components inside the gas generator can splash out, causing injury to passengers inside the car.

Hyundai Thanh Cong conducted the recall to install additional protective covers for the seat belt tensioner of the involved vehicles. The recall began on February 10th and is expected to last nearly 17 years (January 1st, 2050). At the company’s authorized dealers, time for reviewing and applying fix is about 40 minutes per vehicle and free of charge.

Hyundai Santa Fe owners can look up Vehicle Identification Number of the cars involved in recall on the website of the Vietnam Register.

Santa Fe is a D-size SUV model, which is the largest and most expensive model in Hyundai’s product series in Vietnam. In 2022, Santa Fe leads the segment with sales volume of 10,603 vehicles. In 2021 this number was 12,160 vehicles, a total of 22,763 vehicles in the last two years. Competitors of this Korean models include Mazda CX-8, Kia Sorento, Toyota Fortuner…
