Sales of A-segment automobiles: Vinfast Fadil trumps with over half of the market share

23 Jan 2022

After a year of great market turbulence due to Covid, most products plummet in sales. However, this is not the case for Vinfast Fadil.

In line with the infrastructure and financial conditions of today’s majority, class A cars are still the brightest choice of the Vietnamese consumers. Proof of this is the total sales of the A-segment cars in 2021 reaching 45,126 units.

2021 is a difficult year for the four-wheeler market due to the impact of the pandemic. The A-segment is also inevitably affected when sales decreased by 4.6% compared to 2020 (47,280 units). Among these, VinFast Fadil played a significant part when it made a strong breakthrough and positive growth, in contrast to other models in the same segment.

VinFast Fadil: 24,128 units

2021 is a successful year for VinFast Fadil. The car not only topped the A-segment but also became the best-selling model of the whole auto industry in 2021, far ahead of other big names.

With a growth rate of 34%, VinFast Fadil is considered the “golden egg” of the Vietnamese brand while also carries the entire car segment when it accounts for 53.5% of the market share. As a result, the total number of small urban cars sold in 2021 did not decline too much compared to the previous year.

VinFast Fadil attracts customers by its youthful design, outstanding overall size, and relatively spacious interior. VinFast Fadil has a 4-cylinder in-line engine with a capacity of 1.4L, producing a maximum capacity of 98 horsepower and maximum torque of 128 Nm. Coupled with the engine is a CVT gearbox, providing a smooth and quiet driving experience.

VinFast Fadil car prices are listed at 425 million, 459 million, and 499 million for 3 versions, respectively: Standard, Advanced, and Premium. At this price, Fadil is more expensive than its competitors in the same segment, but thanks to VinFast’s frequent application of promotional discounts, plus incentives for locally assembled cars, the car has a more competitive price. Unfortunately, by the end of this year, VinFast will no longer sell Fadil.

Hyundai Grand i10: 11,732 units

The turbulent year of 2021 made the Hyundai Grand i10 somewhat out of breath and had to give up the throne to rival VinFast Fadil. Occupying 26% market share, but Hyundai Grand i10 only achieved cumulative sales of 11,732 units in 2021, a sharp decrease of 33.2% compared to 2020.

The addition of a new version with an exterior redesign and a number of new features has helped the Hyundai Grand i10 receive positive feedback from customers, resulting in the number of cars sold better in the year-end period. Although the Hyundai Grand i10 cannot retain the top position in the A-class segment as in 2020, it is still among the top 10 best-selling cars in the whole market.

Hyundai Grand i10 owns a quite fashionable and youthful appearance. Meanwhile, the interior has notable utility features such as a 5.3-inch multi-information screen, an 8-inch entertainment screen, integrated reversing camera and Apple CarPlay / Android Auto connectivity, audio system 4 speakers or cruise control system.

The car is equipped with a 1.2L MPI Kappa petrol engine, producing a maximum capacity of 83 horsepower and maximum torque of 114 Nm. The transmission is a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic, depending on version.

Hyundai Grand i10 is a model that is rather familiar to Vietnamese consumers, not only from a reputable brand but also easily accessible price, ranging from 360 – 455 million VND for 6 versions, including sedans and hatchbacks, giving them a great advantage over other competitors.

Kia Morning: 3,904 units

In third place is Kia Morning with 3,904 units sold. Compared to 2020, the total number of Kia Morning 2021 cars has decreased by 37.3% and only accounts for 8.7% of the market share.

The biggest highlight of the Kia Morning series is probably in the two high-end versions GT-Line and X-Line when possessing eye-catching appearance as well as customization for interiors. In addition, there is a Kappa petrol engine, 1.25L in capacity, for a maximum capacity of 83 horsepower and maximum torque of 120 Nm, combined with a 4-speed automatic transmission.

Kia Morning 2022 has quite a lot of price advantages when it ranges from 304 to 439 million for 6 versions. This is also the model with the lowest starting price in the segment.

Honda Brio: 2,870 units

Honda Brio ở vị trí thứ 4

After months of staying at the bottom of the table and prospering in the last few months of the year, Honda Brio finally finished at the 4th position with 2,870 cars leaving stores, accounting for 6.4% of the market share. The decline in sales of Honda Brio is the lowest in the ranking with -1.2%. However, the total number of cars sold by Brio is quite modest compared to the other competitors.

The price of Honda Brio starts from 418 to 454 million VND for all versions. This price is quite high compared to most cars in the A-segment, a hundred million more expensive than Kia Morning, and only a little bit less than VinFast Fadil. Honda Brio also has fewer versions than competitors. The price difference is mainly because of the exterior color. This is probably the main reason why Brio struggles to compete in the rankings, despite being evaluated quite well in terms of performance, fuel consumption, interior space, quality, quantity, and design.

Toyota Wigo: 2,492 units

It is not surprising that the Toyota Wigo ranks at the bottom of this ranking. With only 2,492 units sold during a year of 2021, Toyota Wigo accounted for 5.4% of the market share, downed by 2.7% from last year.

The price of Toyota Wigo is listed at 352 million for the MT version and 385 million for the AT version. Compared to those above, Toyota Wigo has a mid-range price and does not stand out in this manner. This model received less improvements and get to markets by the import route, so it is generally inferior against its competitors.

Toyota Wigo uses a 4-cylinder 1.2L gasoline engine, producing a maximum capacity of 87 horsepower and maximum torque of 108 Nm. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic transmission.

Conclusion

The positions in the A-class car sales table in 2021 have been sealed, with the throne belongs to VinFast Fadil. Keeping track of what the 5 models have achieved over the past year, it is quite possible to guess the outcome of this race.
