Top 10 best-selling car models in Vietnam in 2020: The rise of Korean automobile

13 Jan 2021

10 best-selling car models in 2020 in Vietnam were officially revealed, showing that Toyota Vios is still regarded as the “national car”, but Hyundai is the leading car manufacturer in the market with 4 representatives out of 10 models.

2020 has officially ended and automakers also finalized their sales of car models. 2020 can be said to be a difficult and challenging year for the Vietnamese automobile industry due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. However, there are still models that have maintained their position in the Vietnamese market over the past year. The list of 10 best-selling car models in Vietnam in 2020 below has partly shown that.

Leading among the 10 best-selling cars in Vietnam in the past year is the B-class sedan Toyota Vios. With total sales of 30,251 units, Toyota Vios has kept its “throne” in the Vietnamese market. Sales of Toyota Vios in December 2020 also increased strongly with more than 4,053 vehicles delivered to users. This is an impressive result because in the last month of 2020, apart from the 50% discount on registration fees from the Government, the Toyota Vios price was only slightly reduced by 10-15 million VND at some dealers.

Following Toyota Vios, the second place is a competitor in the same segment, Hyundai Accent, with the total number of cars sold in 2020 is 20,776 cars. Particularly in December 2020, Hyundai Accent achieved record sales results with 3,254 vehicles. This is a positive number, but only equals about 2/3 of Toyota Vios.

The most surprising model in the top 10 best-selling cars in Vietnam market in 2020 is probably the Vietnamese-made Vinfast Fadil. This Grade A urban car had a prosperous 2020 when it ranked third in the list with 18,016 units sold. In December 2020, the A-class hatchback from the Vietnamese automaker sold 2,472 cars, significantly lower than the previous November. However, VinFast Fadil is still the car that many Vietnamese chose to buy in 2020.

In fourth place is the Hyundai Grand i10 – another Korean model – with sales reaching 17,596 units sold in 2020. In previous years, the Hyundai Grand i10 was regularly the best-selling car in the A-grade segment in Vietnam. However, the appearance of VinFast Fadil caused this Korean model to be pushed down to the lower position.

Following closely behind the Hyundai Grand i10 is the small MPV model – Mitsubishi Xpander with 16,844 units sold in 2020. With this result, the Mitsubishi Xpander is also the best-selling MPV model in Vietnam in 2020, beating Toyota Innova.

If the Mitsubishi Xpander is the only MPV on the list, the Ford Ranger is representative of the pickup segment with sales of 13,291 units. According to a representative of Ford Vietnam, Ranger currently accounts for about 50% of the market share of the pickup truck segment in Vietnam and is the company’s flagship model.

Next is the 7th, 8th, and 9th place with the intense competition of three SUV models, including Mazda CX-5 (11,803 cars), Hyundai Santa Fe (11,425 cars) and Honda CR-V (11,365 cars). It can be said that out of these three models, the Honda CR-V had a spectacular breakthrough in December 2020 when it sold 3,226 cars and rose to the 9th in the top 10 best-selling cars of the year. At the bottom of the list is Hyundai Tucson with 10,872 cars sold to Vietnamese in 2020.

It can be seen that 2020 is a successful year for Hyundai when this Korean car brand has four models in the top 10 best-selling cars of the year in Vietnam. Meanwhile, other newbies like Toyota Corolla Cross or KIA Seltos, despite having good sales, were distributed in the last months of the year, so they cannot be on this list. It is very likely that in 2021, these newbies will soon participate in the top 10 best-selling cars in Vietnam thanks to their attractiveness.
