Toyota Pickup EV – A concept insight into an “electric Tacoma” model

18 Dec 2021

The concept might take a few extra years before being ready for manufacture.

Among the 15 newly introduced electric vehicle concepts by Toyota and Lexus, one of the least talked about is a pickup model collectively known as the Pickup EV. However, we now have some clear photos to view its appearance and speculate on other aspects.

Firstly, the size of this electric pickup concept seems to be on par with the Tacoma. Its design looks similar but with some notable differences. For example, the grille is largely closed except for the openings at the top and bottom.

The headlights on this concept car are rather neat and sturdy with small air vents underneath. The faceplate has a simpler lower part than the current Tacoma, which is also integrated two small fog lights. The ventilation holes in front of the fenders make the overall design somewhat more aggressive. The A-pillars and roofline are both in glossy black. Unfortunately, these photos do not clearly show the rear and interior of this pickup concept.

Toyota did not provide details about the Pickup EV’s powertrain or chassis. One rumor suggests that the company plans to move the next-generation Tacoma to the TGNA-F chassis architecture, which is being used for the latest Tundra, Land Cruiser, and Lexus LX. This chassis can support electric powertrain. Hence, this pickup truck is likely to employ the same structure.

The next-generation Tacoma is currently in testing, with probe photos showing the car under tight camouflage. One rumor says it will use a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. In addition, the Japanese car manufacturer is also said to intend to merge Hilux and Tacoma into a single product to save costs. This new model is expected to be officially launched in 2022.
