Vietnam motorbike consumption among the top in ASEAN

18 Dec 2021

After the first 3 quarters of 2021, the consumption of motorbikes in Vietnam has reached over 1.7 million units, only after Indonesia in SEA area.

According to data from the Vietnam Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers (VAMM), the Vietnamese motorcycle market sold 1,735,851 units after the first nine months of 2021, down by 10% over the same period last year.

The consumption of new motorbikes by the Vietnamese ranks second in the region, just behind Indonesia, the most populous country in ASEAN. This country has a new motorcycle sale of over 3.7 million units. Compared to 2020, the consumption of Indonesian people increased by 30%.

Countries ranking behind Vietnam such as Thailand and the Philippines register sales of more than 1.2 million vehicles and 1.04 million motorbikes, respectively. Among those listed, Malaysia and Singapore are the two countries where people buy the least motorbikes.

Particularly, Singapore, an islandic nation with a population of 5,918,399 people (as of December 17, 2021), consumed less than 1,000 vehicles after 9 months. This figure is about 21 times lower than the average number of monthly sales in Vietnam (about 192,872 vehicles).

The motorcycle industry in Vietnam over the past two years has recorded a downward trend in purchasing power, but the average number remains over 3 million units/year. In 2018, new motorcycle sales reached nearly 3.4 million units, 3.25 million in 2019, and 2.7 million units in 2020 due to the impact of the Covid-19.

With the population size ranked third in Southeast Asia along with its characteristics of transportation infrastructure, Vietnam is among the 5 countries that consume the most motorbikes in the world, after India, China, Indonesia and Pakistan. Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh are the two cities where people buy the most motorbikes.

In early December, the Hanoi government planned to ban motorbikes from several districts after 2025 under the Target Program to reduce congestion and ensure traffic safety in the 2021-2025 period. Although it is only in the construction stage, this move also creates conflicting arguments about the practicality in the context that motorbikes are still the most accessible and suitable means of transport for the mass population.
