VinFast VF8 sales equals accumulated sales of 4 gas-based rivals in its first month of sales

Despite being delivered to customers since September, it was not until December 2022 that sales of VinFast VF8 took off.

According to VinFast’s sales report, in December 2022, the brand handed over 2,730 VF8 electric SUVs to domestic consumers. With this sales result, VinFast VF8 ranks third in the top 10 best-selling cars of the month, just behind Hyundai Accent (2,929 cars) and Toyota Vios (2,764 cars).

Notably, this is also the only billion-VND car on the market to reach the top 10 best-selling cars in the market. Of which, the two models ranked above VinFast VF8 are popular sedans with selling prices of about 500 million. Other names in the top 10 such as Toyota Corolla Cross, Ford Ranger, Hyundai Creta … or VinFast VF e34 are also priced lower than 1 billion VND.

Sales of D-class SUV/crossover models in Vietnam in December 2022.

The number of more than 2,700 cars handed over by VinFast VF8 is considered impressive and completely superior when compared to gasoline models in the same segment. Specifically, in the D-size SUV/crossover segment, the sales of VinFast VF8 are equal to combined sales of 4 other top competitors, including Ford Everest (1,073 cars), Hyundai Santa Fe (950 cars), Toyota Fortuner (464 cars), and Mazda CX-8 (259 cars) combined – 2,746 cars in total. In November, VinFast VF8 achieved sales of 412 vehicles.

Thus, after about 4 months on the shelves, it seems that VinFast VF8 has really participated in the race to conquer the market when supply problems have been resolved satisfactorily. Recently, people have also started seeing more VinFast VF8s on the streets in big cities.

Positioned in the price segment of about 1 billion VND, selling price is not a barrier of VF8 compared to gasoline-powered competitors. This model attracts attention because of the novelty of a vehicle that is considered futuristic with many high-end features as well as ADAS driver assistance technology, which was previously only available on luxury models. In addition, buyers of VinFast VF8 also save a large amount, equivalent to 100% of the vehicle’s registration fee thanks to the support policy specifically for electric vehicles.

The impressive sales in December 2022 of VF8 and VF e34 could mark VinFast’s return to the sales track after a few months of shifting from petrol to electric cars.

Aside from VinFast VF8, model VF e34 also had a successful month with sales of 1,548 vehicles, ranking 8th in the top 10 best-selling cars in the market.

Meanwhile, the company’s gasoline models, despite having been discontinued for a while, still achieve impressive sales in 2022 compared to competitors. For example, VinFast Fadil, with only 7 months of sales, still has similar sales to the best-selling model in the A-class hatchback segment, Hyundai Grand i10 at 10,661 cars compared to i10’s 10,752. VinFast Lux A2.0 is not lagging far from Toyota Camry (3,683 compared to 4,471 units), despite stopping sales in the last 4 months of the year.

In 2023, VinFast will continue to open for sale the VF5 Plus (expected from May). Thus, the company’s product range will return with at least 3 models – the same as before.

It can be expected that the Vietnamese car company will continue to compete fairly with the big companies in the auto market. VinFast’s new product range is pure electric cars – models that are still considered niche even in large markets.
