What are the competitors of Vinfast’s segment in America?

03 Apr 2022

Aside from American-made electric models like Tesla or Ford, Vinfast VF8 and VF9 will also have to face competition from Korea, being Kia and Hyundai.

On March 29th, VinFast and the North Carolina state government signed a memorandum of understanding on the construction of the Vietnamese automaker’s first factory in the North American market, the first step of the Vietnamese car brand in its production and trading strategy for electric cars in the US market.

Earlier at the CES 2022 exhibition, VinFast also announced the selling price of VF8 and VF9 models in the US market at $41,000 and $56,000, respectively, excluding taxes. With this price range, which electric car models VF8 and VF9 will compete with in the US when officially sold there?

Ford Mustang Mach-E: $42,895 – $59,900

Ford Mustang Mach-E GT

Bearing the name Mustang, the Ford Mustang Mach-E is in fact the first electric SUV of the American automaker that was launched at the end of 2019. In the US, the car is being sold in 4 versions: Select, Premium, California Route 1, and GT, priced from $42,895 to $59,900.

In the Select version, Ford Mustang Mach-E is equipped with an electric motor with a capacity of 266 horsepower and maximum torque of 430 Nm. The battery pack of this version has a consumption capacity of 68 kWh, allowing the car to operate 370 km after fully charged.

The second version is the $47,600 Mach-E Premium with the same electric motor but upgraded in equipment. Finally, the GT version priced at $ 59,900 is the most powerful thanks to an electric motor with a capacity of 459 horsepower and 985 Nm of torque. The vehicle’s battery pack has a capacity of 88 kWh, giving the car a range of 420 km.

Tesla Model 3: 44,990 – 58,990 USD

Having the same price range as the VinFast VF8 and VF9 in the US is the Tesla Model 3 electric sedan of the domestic electric car company Tesla. Currently, Tesla Model 3 in the US is available in 3 versions including Standard Plus, Long Range, and Performance.

In which, Tesla Model 3 Standard Plus is capable of operating 425 km with only 50 kWh battery pack. Next version is the Long Range capable of traveling 570 km thanks to the 82-kWh battery pack. Finally, the Performance version has the same 82 kWh battery pack with a range of 507 km.

Another competitor that Vinfast VF8 has to face in the U.S is the Volvo XC40 Recharge electric SUV, an electric version of the XC40, priced at $53,990. These units are equipped with a 402 hp electric motor AWD with a 78-kWh battery pack, which helps the car operate 335 km per full charge.

Tesla Model Y: 39,990 – 63,990 USD

Another rival of the VF8 and VF9 is the Model Y electric SUV from Tesla. Similar to Model 3, Model Y is sold in the US under 3 versions including Standard Range, Long Range, and Performance.

The lowest equipment version of Standard Range comes with an electric motor and rear-wheel drive system, accompanied by a 75-kWh battery pack, helping the car operate 395 km. The Long Range version of Model Y has the same equipment, but has a longer operating range, up to 525 km. Finally, the Performance version is the most powerful, but every full charge covers only 488 km.

In addition to the aforementioned models, VinFast VF8 and VF9 will continue to confront a series of electric SUVs from Korea, namely Kia EV and Hyundai Ioniq. It is expected that Korean electric car models will soon be available in the US market in 2022 and early 2023. In the second quarter of this year, the Kia EV6 electric car will also be launched and sold in the Vietnamese market.
