With plummeting sales, Mazda6 2022 faces discontinuation following high ground clearance trend

Mazda’s flagships are now CX models instead of Mazda6.

Since nearly 2 years ago, we have known that the release of next generation Mazda6 will be in 2022. This is also the time when a series of new rear-wheel drive cars from the Japanese brand is introduced. However, only now we do we learn that the large-size sedan will likely have much less coverage than the previous generation.

As sales of the midsize and large-size sedan segment continue to decline globally, Mazda has also lost its incentive to expand the market for the Mazda6 and is even ready to downsize. In an interview with Drive, Mazda Australia marketing director Alastair Doak said: “…the global sedan segment has been shrinking over the years”.

Therefore, their focus is no longer on Mazda6 but on “4 new SUVs” including CX-60 to CX-90. Of which, CX-60 will be launched on March 8. The future of the Mazda6 wagon version is also unclear as Mazda has yet to reveal more.

The last update of Mazda6 was in 2018, when the car was added with the option of a 2.5L turbocharged petrol engine. The new rear-wheel drive chassis will be used by the Mazda6 2022, allowing the car to be equipped with a 6-cylinder engine as well as diverse hybrid options.

Mazda6 2022 is expected to launch in the first half of 2022.
