Yamaha registered the copyright for the name YZF-R9

The Yamaha YZF-R9 will bring the frame structure, engine, and technology of the naked bike MT-09, while the appearance takes after the Yamaha YZF-R7.

Recently, Yamaha has officially received a trademark protection certificate for the name “YZF-R9” in the Indian market. It is known that the Japanese automaker has also protected the YZF-R9 brand in its home market of Japan, as well as in Europe and Australia a few months ago.

With the registration for the name YZF-R9, experts believe that the Japanese company plans to launch a completely new sportsbike model with the name Yamaha YZF-R9. At the same time, this new model seems to be developed from the frame and engine of the naked bike MT-09.

Currently, rival brands such as Kawasaki, Triumph, and Ducati all have many product lines in multiple segments from 150cc to over 1,000cc. Meanwhile, the number of motorcycle products from Yamaha is still quite modest. Therefore, it is reasonable and necessary for them to launch new products on the basis of existing products to compete for market share and brand presence.

With the Yamaha YZF-R9, it is likely that this sportbike model will have a similar appearance to the YZF-R7 that was just launched in the second quarter of 2021. This means that the bike will look like a MotoGP racing bike with a soft and aerodynamic design. The lighting system will be quite neat with projector headlamps arranged with impressive positioning lights and simple vertical taillights with good identification.

The chassis and engine of the bike are inherited from the naked bike model MT-09:  diamond frame, CP3 engine, 3 cylinders, 889cc capacity, liquid-cooled, producing 117 horsepower at 10,000 rpm and 93 Nm at 7,000 rpm. This comes with a 6-speed gearbox with a sliding and supporting clutch, along with a 2-way QuickShift.

However, it is possible that Yamaha can recalibrate this equipment. The neck may have a more vertical angle. Meanwhile, the transmission ratio, the engine’s intake, and exhaust system will also be recalibrated to be more suitable for a sportbike. In addition, the suspension system of the bike is also expected to bear new equipment with a shorter journey, and a larger fork size to match the bike’s appearance. Of course, the entire electronic system and support features of the Yamaha MT-09 will also be transferred to the YZF-R9 to provide maximum support for the vehicle and users.

Currently, these are merely speculations based on what Yamaha has done with the YZF-R7 model. More detailed information about the Yamaha YZF-R9 will be confirmed when the Japanese automaker officially launches this model in the future.
