NISSAN X-TRAIL AND TEANA DISCONTINUED IN THAILAND DUE TO ROCK-BOTTOM SALES

09 Sep 2020

Nissan cuts cost aggressively.

Nissan Thailand has sent out internal documents to its domestic dealers informing that 3 Japanese models will be discontinued in the near future, which include X-Trail SUV, Teana mid-size sedan and small-sized Sylphy.

The dealers in Nissan Thailand were informed that when they sell out the remaining cars of said product lines, they will not be provided with new cars. Dealers were also asked to remove all catalogs and both physical and digital advertisements related to the models.

According to AutoIndustriya, the decision made by Nissan Thailand was not because the above models are defective or need to be recalled, but merely because of sales. Thailand – sometimes referred to as “the Detroit of Southeast Asia”- is the largest vehicle assembly facility in the region as international automakers often set up production facilities here and then export to neighboring markets.

Therefore, it was extremely surprising that Nissan asked the Thai branch to stop producing these three models all at once. While Sylphy is old and Teana has not achieved sales as expected, the X-Trail is a completely different problem when it is nowhere bad in the world (ranked 7th in total global sales in the first half of 2020).

Even so, it seems that Nissan is determined to push into segments that offer greater benefits, including compact urban cars (which currently perform very well in China), compact SUVs, pickups and environment-friendly cars.
