In 2021, the Japanese automaker delivered a total of 10,495,548 vehicles globally, beating the Volkswagen Group with sales of 9,305,000 vehicles from all brands. These numbers represent steady growth of 10.1% for Toyota, while Volkswagen saw a 4.5% decrease in vehicle sales.

In an official press release, Toyota explained that “the impact of COVID-19 has been less severe than in 2020”, which has allowed the company to significantly increase production and sales last year. However, at the moment, it is difficult for the auto industry to predict how parts supply trends will develop in the next 12 months.

On the other hand, the Volkswagen Group has highlighted the number of electric vehicle deliveries in 2021. Through all of its brands, the German car company has nearly doubled the number of battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales from the previous year to 452,900 units, accounting for 5.1% of the group’s total sales last year.

It may be too early to give Toyota the title of the world’s largest automaker in terms of vehicle sales in 2021, as companies like General Motors and Stellantis have yet to release final numbers. However, given how Toyota beat GM in the US market for the first time in nine decades, perhaps the global sales situation will be similar.

Stellantis sales in the US last year also fell 2% to about 1.8 million vehicles, meaning Toyota can rest assured of its leadership position. However, we will still wait for the full numbers from GM and Stellantis until a final conclusion can be reached.
