Vietnam’s car buying strength continues to increase

17 Apr 2022

In March, the whole market sold 46,598 vehicles, up by 16% over the same period in 2021.

Recent data have summarized the sales of VAMA (36,962 units), TC Motor – the distributor of Hyundai cars (7,069 units) and VinFast (2,567 units). As many brands have yet to publish sales figures such as Nissan, Subaru, Volkswagen, or luxury car brands including Audi, Mercedes, Volvo… the actual sales volume of the market is even larger.

The car market in March became active again after the Lunar New Year. Sales of all brands grew positively compared to February. Thanks to the continuous launch of new products, consumers are offered more options. The 50% discount on registration fees is still being applied (until the end of May) also helps to increase purchasing power.

At the end of the first quarter, the cumulative sales of VAMA reached 85,797 vehicles, up by 19% over the same period in 2021. Except for Ford, which decreased by 44%, sales of all brands under this organization grew. Toyota is still the leader with 18,633 sold vehicles, followed by the likes of Kia, Mazda, Honda, and Mitsubishi.

After the first 3 months of 2022, Hyundai delivered 18,670 vehicles to customers, leading in sales of the whole market. However, in terms of sedans alone, Toyota remains on top. VinFast sold more than 6,700 cars, with the largest contribution coming from the Fadil (accounting for nearly 70% of total sales). Their popular fully electric car model VF e34 so far has a total of 505 units delivered to customers.

Representatives of car manufacturers said that the purchasing power of Vietnamese cars will continue to grow in the coming months, especially when the incentive to reduce registration fees is only further valid for two months. However, the shortage of goods on a large scale, both in mass and high-end cars, may cause the market’s consumption to not be as expected.

The situation of demand exceeding supply causes many models to cost extra tens of millions of VND at dealers. Such cases can include Toyota Veloz Cross, Hyundai Santa Fe, Tucson, Ford Ranger …
