While Southeast Asian countries have introduced many policies to attract manufacturers and encourage people to use electric vehicles, Vietnam has been one step ahead with mastering the global electric car brands, and soon owning a comprehensive electric vehicle ecosystem.
Attractive policies promoting investment in electric vehicle production in Southeast Asia
The electric car development in Southeast Asia is stronger than ever. In December 2022, Tesla officially entered the Thai market with 2 models launched in Bangkok. Before Tesla, BYD and Great Wall Motor were present for a while.
BMW has also started building a hybrid car assembly plant (both petrol and electric) in Thailand since 2017. Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz has recently announced that it will produce the EQS electric car model in Thailand at the end of year.
Thailand’s vision is to compete with Indonesia as an electric vehicle manufacturing hub by 2035. Therefore, the Thai Government is urgently supporting the development of a green car ecosystem. Most notably, in April, the Thai Board of Investment (BOI) approved an incentive package in charging station investment with a 3–5-year corporate income tax exemption depending on conditions for private investors. This is a policy that is expected to accelerate the charging station network in this country, reaching the milestone of 12,000 DC fast charging ports by 2030.
Equally competitive is Indonesia. In March 2022, Hyundai Motor opened a production plant here. After which, this factory produces many Ioniq 5 electric vehicle models. The joint venture between GM Motors, SAIC, and Wuling Motors (SAIC – GM – Wuling Automobile) is also expected to begin production in the Southeast Asian countries later this year. This all works towards Indonesia’s ambitious goal of having 2.2 million electric cars by 2030.
Promotion of Vietnam’s electric vehicle market to the world
In Southeast Asia, Vietnam is emerging as a potential market with the presence of VinFast and a comprehensive electric vehicle ecosystem.
Regarding products, VinFast has officially introduced a range of electric vehicle products in all segments, from A to E. Currently, VinFast’s C-sized electric SUV model – VF e34 – has been available to users since December 2021, while the D-size model – VF 8 – has also begun to be handed over in September this year.
Most recently, VinFast also officially opened deposit of VF 5 Plus – a class-A electric car is forecast to be one that creates great attraction in the market with a price of just under 500 million VND but has superior equipment to other cars in the same segment on the market.
In fact, it is rare for any pure electric car company to be able to commercialize up to 4 electric car models in just over 2 years, and even export electric cars to the US market. Many experts say that currently, major car brands bring electric vehicles to Vietnam mainly to test the market, but certainly no brand can deploy sales to consumers on as large a scale as VinFast.
As for services, many unique policies of VinFast are making a strong impression and helping users gradually change their travel habits. It is worth mentioning the 7- to 10-year warranty policy of the Vietnamese car company, which has forced the big players in the auto industry to change accordingly. Service standards are always VinFast’s competitive edge, not only ensuring the interests of customers but also the commitment of the company’s quality.
In addition, to create convenience for users, the Vietnamese automaker also pioneered in deploying mobile repair services (named Mobile Service) and 24/7 electric car battery rescue service (Mobile Charging). Customers using VinFast cars also enjoy the privilege of using the company’s free 24/7 rescue service during the warranty period and many privileges of the Vingroup service ecosystem. This is also a new standard that is difficult for other automakers to overcome even though it has existed in the Vietnamese market for a decade.
According to experts, in terms of electric vehicle charging station infrastructure alone, Vietnam is leading the region and ahead of many developed countries in the world. Although there is no support policy like other countries, the infrastructure system actively developed by VinFast has now reached tens of thousands of charging ports in all 63 provinces/cities. This year, as planned, 150,000 VinFast charging ports will be completed across the country, bringing peace of mind to users.
The map of VinFast’s charging station is also calculated scientifically, from commercial centers, apartments, schools to rest stops on highways… Especially recently, VinFast has joined petrol trading units. The country’s largest oil company like Petrolimex, PVOil develops 2-in-1 gas stations, meeting both refueling and charging vehicles.
Joining later in the auto market, but with the initiative, comprehensive strategy and constantly creating new standards in all aspects, VinFast has fundamentally changed the landscape of the automobile market in Vietnam. According to experts, although there is only one dominant brand, Vietnam is a rare market in the region where there is a full electric vehicle ecosystem in all three aspects: products, services, and infrastructure. This helps our country step by step realize the goal of becoming an important electric car production center in Southeast Asia in the next 5 years.
