Outselling by only 56,800 cars from compatriot competitors is enough for BMW to maintain its title of the best-selling brand of the global luxury car segment.
In 2022, a total of 2,100,692 BMW cars were sold. Mercedes’ results were 2,043,900 vehicles. The difference was only 56,792 cars.
Taking into account sales of all three sub-brands of the BMW group, including BMW, Mini, and Rolls-Royce, the result will be nearly 2.5 million vehicles in 2022, down 4.8% compared to 2021 due to impacts from the supply chain.
However, sales of electric vehicles of the German group increased by nearly 108%, reaching nearly 216,000 vehicles thanks to the success of models such as i4 and iX.
For BMW alone, sales of electric vehicles, including both pure electric and plug-in hybrids, increased by 35.6% to nearly 373,000 vehicles. This year, BMW is considered to still grow with the appearance of the i5 model. The company says that fully electric vehicles will make up 15% of its vehicles in 2023.
The high-performance division BMW M also had a successful year when sales increased by 8.4%, reaching a record level in development history, with nearly 177,300 vehicles sold. BMW Motorrad also recorded its best year ever (sales of nearly 203,000 vehicles, up by 4.4%). Even the super luxury brand Rolls-Royce also grew at 7.8%, delivering more than 6,000 cars.
Only the Mini is down 3% in sales. But the positive aspect is that the number of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles increased by 14.3%. Mini’s electric models are more profitable than internal combustion engine cars.
