2021: year of motorcycles, multiple sales record broken

30 Jan 2022

Series of brands from Europe and Japan had released statistics suggesting that sales of 2-wheeled products had set new records, overcoming the setbacks due to pandemic.

2021 continues to be grim year for many industries as the pandemic continues to cause difficulties in the production process as well as business activities. However, it is quite surprising that motorcycle sales of many brands as well as business reports in some markets recorded impressive numbers.

With Ducati, the Italian brand confirmed sales of 59,447 units in 2021, up by 24% compared to 2020 and 12% to 2019, reaching the highest sales level in the company’s 95-year history. In which, the flagship model was the all-new Multistrada V4 with 9,957 bikes sold despite only released in over a year. The model ranked above Scrambler and Monster. Ducati’s largest market in 2021 is the US with total sales of 9,007 vehicles, then comes the next two major markets: Italy and Germany.

Another European giant what also did well in 2021 is BMW Motorrad. Accordingly, the two-wheeler motorcycle production segment of the German brand recorded sales of 194,261 units worldwide, significantly outperforming the sales of the previous two years. Of course, the biggest contributor was no other than the R1250GS, an Adventure Touring model considered as standard in the segment. According to statistics published by BMW Motorrad, the German brand sold about 60,000 1250GS units in 2021. Others such as R1250RT, R18, and S1000R are new products that also had good business results.

However, the total sales of BMW Motorrad and Ducati are still not comparable to Pierer Mobility Group, the parent company of a series of brands such as KTM, Husqvarna, and GasGas. According to the announcement of this group, the total of all 3 brands was 332,881, an increase of 23% compared to 2020. Of which, about 120,000 were sold in Europe, while the remaining 210,000 vehicles are sold in many other markets around the world.

As a collection of 3 famous European brands, it is understandable that Pierer Mobility Group achieved high sales. However, it is worth singling out KTM, a key brand with a wide range of products from entry level to high-end models. These include Duke in the Naked bike segment, RC in the Sportbike series, Adventure in ADV, and EnduroCross and Supermoto all-terrain vehicles.

In terms of the overall market, a series of national two-wheeler markets, including Sports, Cub, and Scooters in Japan, the US, the UK, Italy, Spain, and Australia, have all recorded impressive sales growth compared to 2019 and 2020. In which, sales of that in Japan reached a record high in the past 23 years.
