In 2015, Volkswagen was caught cheating emissions tests that make consumers lost belief seriously in diesel engines.

Increasingly strict emission regulations have also contributed to the decline of diesel engines. From 2015 to 2023, the share of diesel cars in Europe has fallen from 50% to 13%.

Meanwhile, the market share of electric cars has grown rapidly. In 2023, for the first time in history, sales of electric cars using battery have surpassed that of diesel ones in Europe.

According to a report by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), in June 2023, sales of battery electric vehicles have increased, accounting for 15.1% of the market share, higher than 10.7% compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, the share of diesel cars fell sharply to only 13.4%, much lower than the figure of 17.4% of the same period last year.

Gasoline cars, although have the largest market share of 36.3%, are lower than the figure of 38.5% that achieved in the same period last year. The market share of hybrid cars also increased, with 7.9% for PHEVs and 24.3% for HEVs.

It shows that the market share of gasoline and diesel vehicles is under threat by the growth of electric and hybrid vehicles.

ACEA forecasts that the automotive market in Europe will continue to shift to electric vehicles in the coming years. Electric vehicles are increasingly attracting consumers thanks to advantages such as the application of multiple new technologies, eco-friendliness or reasonable prices.

Since the Euro 7 emission standard is expected to come into force from 2025 and European automakers will be prohibited from selling emission vehicles from 2035, there have been many challenges for manufacturers of internal combustion engine vehicles.

Currently, automakers are also investing heavily in electric vehicles, with numerous new models to be launched in the coming years.
