Overheating in the Honda CBR1000RR-R SP 2021 exhaust may cause the oil cooling pipe to melt or crack, resulting in an oil leak.

On February 3, 2022, Honda USA just released a press release about the recall of all 2021 Honda CBR1000RR-R SP units due to the risk of oil leakage, affecting the engine as well as safety while using the vehicle.

According to information published by Honda, under some conditions, the oil cooling pipe may overheat, causing dents or rupture of the pipe, causing engine oil to leak and splash into the pipe exhaust or causing the rear tire to be slippery, which can easily lead to an accident or fire.

Due to this situation, Honda decided to recall the CBR1000RR-R SP 2021 manufactured in the period April 28, 2021 – October 4, 2021, equivalent to 100% of the 3R 2021 units that Honda sold in the US. The number is 331 units in all. It is known that the above error was initially detected in the Japanese market, then in some cases in Europe and the US in 2021.

According to Honda, when using the bike in some specific conditions, such as following other bikes or traveling at slow speeds, the vehicle’s exhaust will not receive enough cool air to dissipate heat. The heat released from the exhaust manifold may be too great, causing the inlet hose to the cooler to become distorted or cracked, resulting in a leak of engine oil.

After being recalled, all Honda CBR1000RR-R SP 2021 vehicles will be replaced with a new cooling oil pipe, then fitted with an additional insulation cover between the exhaust manifold and the oil cooler pipe. The cost of spare parts and labor will be fully covered by Honda distributors. However, due to the lack of accessories, the recall and error correction on CBR1000RR-R SP will take place in separate stages.

Currently, Honda CBR1000RR-R SP 2021 is also being sold in the Vietnamese market for 1.049 billion VND. Compared to the standard version, the SP version is equipped with a more advanced Ohlins suspension system with better performance.
