Tesla Model Y was the best-selling model globally in the first quarter of the year, surpassing Toyota Corolla and RAV4.

According to automotive market research firm JATO, the Tesla Model Y was the world’s best-selling car model in the first quarter of this year. The data, collected from 53 markets worldwide and supplemented with information and estimates from other key markets, confirms Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s previous assertion that the Model Y would become the best-selling new car globally by 2023.

Despite the Model Y’s mid/high selling price in most markets, Tesla’s consistent price cuts have contributed to its global expansion and increased demand for the model. In the previous year, the Model Y sold 747,500 units, marking a 91% increase from 2021. However, it still trailed behind the Toyota RAV4 (1,015,500 units) and Toyota Corolla (991,500 units).

Nonetheless, the gap between the Model Y and the Toyota models has been narrowing due to Tesla’s price reductions and the growing popularity of electric vehicles worldwide. In the first quarter of this year, the Tesla Model Y delivered 267,200 vehicles to customers, representing a 69% increase compared to the same period last year. The Model Y’s key markets are China, the US, and Europe.

The Toyota Corolla secured the second position with sales of 256,400 units, although it experienced a decline, including a 29% decrease in China and a 10% decrease in the US compared to the previous year.

The third, fourth, and fifth positions are occupied by Toyota models as well. The Hilux sold 214,700 vehicles, the RAV4 sold 211,000 vehicles, and the Camry sold 166,200 vehicles. The RAV4 and Camry primarily target developed markets, while the Hilux enjoys strong sales in emerging economies.
