Yamaha R9 and R9 SP will share the CP3 engine with the MT-09, bringing about supreme power and shortening the distance between R7 and R1.

After discontinuing supersport model Yamaha R6 in November 2020, Yamaha had filled the gap in the mid-range segment with the YZF-R7 sportsbike and MT-07 naked bike. However, the twin cylinder engine block of these two models cannot meet the expectations of users like the R6. Therefore, experts believe that Yamaha will shorten the gap between the R1 and R7 models with the R9, developed from the Yamaha MT-09 naked bike model.

This came true when Yamaha registered for copyright protection for the name R9 in India, along with a type approval document for two new models named RN82 and RN83.This shows that there will be two new Yamaha models coming to the market in the near future.

Similar to other manufacturers, Yamaha uses its own code to identify the vehicle segment as well as the engine capacity for its products. For example, the codename V would represent a cruiser, D would represent an Adventure model, and R would be the code for a sportbike or naked bike.

In addition, the Japanese automaker also added other symbols to determine the engine capacity of the vehicle. Engines from 600-750cc will have an additional M in the code; 1,000cc engines and above will have a P symbol; and finally, an N symbol for those equipped with 750-1,000cc engines. Based on this code placement, it can be predicted that Yamaha’s two new RN82 and RN83 models will be sportbikes with engines from 750-1,000cc. With this information, it is believed that Yamaha’s new duo may be Yamaha R9 and Yamaha R9 SP (equipped with more advanced suspension).

Of course, the new Yamaha R9 duo will both use the all-new 889cc 3-cylinder CP3 engine recently introduced on the Yamaha MT-09 2021. On a naked bike, this engine block carries a power of 119 horsepower at 11,000 rpm, and maximum torque of 93 Nm at 7,000 rpm.

It is unclear if Yamaha will calibrate said CP3 engine block when it is put on the R9 sportbike model. But with the mentioned parameters, although there are no changes, the CP3 engine line is strong enough to please any fastidious bikers.
