According to JD Power, a renowned US market research firm, new cars are increasingly facing problems, primarily related to new technology and safety systems. The average number of problems per 100 vehicles (PP100) has risen to 192 this year compared to 180 last year. However, some brands have stood out for their quality performance. Here are the top 10 brands with the least problems, based on the survey:

Ranking Brand PP100
1 Dodge 140
2 Ram 141
3 Alfa Romeo 143
4 Buick 162
5 Chevrolet 166
6 GMC 167
7 Porsche 167
8 Cadillac 170
9 Kia 170
10 Lexus 171

Notably, Dodge claimed the top spot this year, followed by Ram and Alfa Romeo. Several American brands under General Motors, including Buick, Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac, secured positions in the top 10. Ford and its sub-brand Lincoln ranked below the average. Porsche, a German sports car brand, placed 7th, while Kia took the 9th spot. Hyundai, Kia’s parent company, ranked 17th, and Toyota’s luxury brand Lexus closed the top 10. Volvo and Chrysler were at the bottom of the ranking, both with 260 problems per 100 vehicles.

The research highlights increasing issues with advanced driver-assist features like lane departure warning and automatic emergency braking, as well as problems with wireless charging pads for smartphones. Basic components such as door handles also posed challenges for automakers. Some manufacturers have introduced high-tech door handles in their new models, possibly inspired by Tesla.

It’s worth noting that electric car companies like Tesla, Polestar, Lucid, and Rivian were not included in the rankings as JD Power was not granted access to customer data in 15 states. However, available data suggests that Tesla and Polestar, among these electric car brands, had the highest number of problems and breakdowns, with 257 and 313 per 100 vehicles, respectively.

The study was based on a survey of customers who purchased or leased new cars, gathering information on the problems they encountered during the first 90 days of ownership. Over 93,000 participants took part in this year’s survey.
