The Vietnamese automotive market experienced a challenging first half of 2023, with a 31% decrease in vehicle sales compared to the same period in 2022. Among the 11 car manufacturers that have reported sales figures, only Ford achieved positive growth.

Kia saw the largest decline in sales, down 51%, which allowed Hyundai and Ford to rise in the sales rankings. Surprisingly, no Kia models made it to the list of the top 10 best-selling models in the first half of the year. Kia’s main models, such as Seltos and K3, faced a sharp drop in sales, while new products like Carens and Sportage failed to attract significant attention compared to competitors in their segments.

Toyota retained its position as the most popular car brand in Vietnam, with a diverse product range. Despite a 38% decrease in sales compared to the first half of 2022, Toyota’s total sales of 26,637 vehicles were less affected than Kia’s. The Corolla Cross became Toyota’s best-selling model, followed by the Vios and Veloz Cross, all leading their respective segments.

Hyundai closely followed Toyota, with its main models i10 and Accent maintaining stable sales. The Creta, a B-sized crossover, contributed significantly to Hyundai’s sales and led the market share in its segment.

Ford stood out as the only brand with sales growth, attributed to the introduction of new models like the new generation Ranger, Everest, and Territory. In the first half of 2022, Ford’s sales were affected as its flagship models reached the end of their product life cycles. However, with the arrival of new models, Ford’s sales increased in the second half of 2022.

Mazda, Mitsubishi, and VinFast were among the brands that sold over 10,000 vehicles in the first half of 2023. Mazda’s sales relied on the CX-5, which had a recently upgraded version with competitive pricing in the B+ and B segments. Mitsubishi’s Xpander remained the sales leader for the company and dominated the MPV segment, surpassing competitors like the Toyota Veloz and Hyundai Stargazer. VinFast’s sales received a boost from its car rental company and GSM electric taxi service, allowing it to rank seventh among the largest car-selling brands in Vietnam.

Honda experienced a significant decrease in sales of over 50% due to reduced supply of models like the CR-V and City, in anticipation of the launch of new versions. Suzuki, Peugeot, and Isuzu sold less than 2,000 cars each in the first six months of 2023.

In terms of manufacturers and distributors, Truong Hai (Thaco Auto) held the largest market share with 41,607 vehicles sold, including Kia, Mazda, Peugeot, BMW, Mini, and commercial vehicles. Hyundai Thanh Cong ranked second with 28,011 vehicles sold, while Toyota Vietnam ranked third with 27,420 vehicles sold, including Lexus models. Thaco and Hyundai both have commercial vehicles in their product lineup, while Toyota focuses solely on passenger cars.
