The Japanese company sold nearly 10.5 million vehicles in 2022, maintaining the throne in the world auto industry for the third year in a row.
According to an announcement on January 30, Toyota Group’s global sales include both the Hino subsidiary, which specializes in trucks, as well as the Daihatsu sub-brand. Compared to 2021, business results in 2022 decreased by 0.1% but still enough for Toyota to surpass Volkswagen with a difference of 2 million vehicles.
In fact, sales in Toyota’s domestic market fell 9.6%, by 1.9 million vehicles. However, vehicle exports increased by 2.3%, at 8.58 million units.
Volkswagen also recorded the lowest sales in the past decade, with 8.3 million vehicles sold, mainly due to the impact of Covid-19 as well as supply chain disruptions – the consequences of the Ukrainian conflict.
The chip shortage has also affected Toyota, but the Japanese brand had stated that the high demand in Asia and the increase in production and optimization in Asia and North America helped it increase global production by 5% in 2022.
In November 2022, Toyota also revised its production forecast for the current financial year. Through the end of March, the estimated result of 9.2 million units is put forward compared to the previous figure of 9.7 million.
In Vietnam, in 2022, Toyota is also the best-selling car brand in Vietnam in 2022 with Vios being the best-seller. Specifically, Toyota surpassed 91,000 vehicles, ranking above Korean rival Hyundai at ~70,000 vehicles. Vios sold over 23,500 units, nearly 1,000 more than its rival the Accent in second place.
