Vietnam automobile consumption ranking in Southeast Asia after Sep 2022

The AAF recently released regional auto market data for the first 9 months of 2022. Of the seven countries tracked, Indonesia and Thailand continue to be the leading market in terms of sales.

AAF tracks and records statistics of 7 countries in Southeast Asia including Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. In total, this region consumed more than 2.5 million cars in the first nine months of 2022, up by 33% from the same period in 2021.

Indonesia and Thailand continue to be the leading auto consumption markets in the region. Specifically, the number of cars sold in Indonesia was 758,216, up by 20.8% over the same period in 2021. Thailand ranked second with 685,979 vehicles, up by 29%.

Following in terms of car sales are Malaysia, Vietnam, and the Philippines, respectively. Respective sales are 516,798 units, 296,403 units, and 248,154 units. Myanmar and Singapore are the two countries with the lowest total car sales, reaching 6,672 vehicles and 32,372 vehicles respectively in the first nine months of 2022.

With these numbers, Vietnamese market ranked fourth, achieving a growth rate of 56.9 % over the same period last year. Among the 7, Vietnam scores the second highest growth market, after Malaysia (growth of 62.1% over the same period).

Regarding the number of cars produced, AAF only counted in 6 markets, excluding Singapore. Accordingly, Thailand was the largest car producer in the region after Sep 2022 with a total production output of 1,429,210 vehicles. In second place is Indonesia with a production volume of 1,065,525 vehicles, an increase of 34.1%. These are the only two countries where the number of cars produced is over 1 million units.

In the first 9 months of 2022, the automobile production output of the Vietnamese market reached 180,127 vehicles, up by 53.3% over the same period last year. With this result, Vietnam ranked 4th in automobile production output. In this manner, Vietnam is behind Malaysia, which produced 508,761 vehicles, up 67.4% from last year.

According to a report by the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA), in September 2022, sales of the whole Vietnamese market reached 33,463 vehicles, up 8.5% compared to August and up 147%. compared to August 2021, as last year was the period of social distancing.

According to VAMA, out of 33,463 vehicles sold, 25,611 were passenger cars, 7,539 were commercial vehicles, and 313 specialized vehicles. Compared to August 2022, sales of passenger cars increased by 2%, commercial vehicles increased by 37%, and specialized vehicles increased by 17%.

Sales of domestically assembled cars reached 17,193 units, up 11% compared to August 2022; sales of imported complete units were 16,270 units, up 6% over the previous month.

The report from VAMA also said that the total sales of the whole market by the end of September reached 296,403 vehicles, up 57% over the same period in 2021. In which, passenger cars reached 231,698 units, up 78%; commercial vehicles reached 60,495 vehicles, up by 10%, and specialized vehicles reached 4,210 vehicles, up by 2% compared to 2021.
