2021 can be said to be a challenging year for the world’s auto manufacturers because of the outbreak of Covid-19 and the global semiconductor chip crisis. However, this did not prevent car manufacturers from continuing to grow, such as Toyota.

Last year, Toyota sold the most cars to global customers with sales up to 8.7 million units, up by 8.1%. As a result, the brand accounts for 10.5% of the market share of the worldwide automobile economy and is far ahead of its competitors. It is known that since 2010 until now, Toyota has continuously been the leading car brand in the world in terms of sales. If including sales of Daihatsu and Lexus sub-brands, Toyota Group sold a total of 10,495,548 vehicles in 2021, an increase of 10.1%.

Ranked second after Toyota is Volkswagen with total sales of 5.2 million vehicles globally, downed by 6.6%. Even when taking into account the total sales of sub-brands such as Audi, Bentley, Lamborghini, Skoda or Bugatti, the Volkswagen group still loses to Toyota. In 2021, the German group sold 9,305,000 vehicles, downed by 4.5%.

The third-best-selling brand globally last year was Honda with sales of 4.3 million units, downed by 1.6 percent, followed by Ford with 4.1 million vehicles (-0.4%). The last position in the top 5 is Hyundai. This Korean brand had sold to 3.5 million customers, an increase of 5.4%.

6th place belongs to Nissan with cumulative sales of 3.7 million vehicles, downed by 1.2%. Right behind is the Korean brand Kia with sales increasing by 6.4% to 2.9 million vehicles. Compared to the ranking in 2020, Kia has increased 1 place.

In eighth place is the Chevrolet brand of General Motors. In 2021, the American car brand sold 2.6 million cars to global customers, downed by 15.4%.

Next is the German brand Mercedes-Benz with sales of 2.4 million vehicles, downed by 2.4%. This sale includes 2,054,962 passenger cars and 334,210 commercial vehicles of the Mercedes-Benz Vans brand.

Closing the list is BMW with 2.2 million units, up by 2.2%. If only cars are counted, BMW was the number 1 luxury car company in the global market last year. Not only in the US but also in China, BMW beat its rival Mercedes-Benz.

In this 2022, car manufacturers continue to face many difficulties due to the unending global semiconductor chip crisis. Another factor is the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Since the beginning of the year, Toyota has continuously had to temporarily close factories in Japan and China due to lack of components, earthquakes, hacker attacks, or Covid-19. In addition, a series of car manufacturers are also temporarily suspending the sale of cars in the Russian market such as Volvo, Toyota, Honda, Mitsubishi, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, or Jaguar Land Rover because of President Vladimir Putin’s military campaign in Ukraine. These are expected to significantly affect the sales of car manufacturers this year.
