ACM City One officially launches – affordable electric car, battery swapping technology

26 Aug 2021

ACM City One can be used for many different purposes, from personal to commercial needs.

Ride-sharing services has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, but automakers still seem to believe it’s the future, given new automobile launches like the Citroën Ami or the Mobilize EZ-1. German startup ACM (Adaptive City Mobility) now also joins the ranks with a new electric vehicle model called the City One. The model was developed with help from Magna and features four doors, a modular cabin, and a replaceable battery pack to reduce downtime when used in a shared fleet.

Enter ACM, a company founded in 2013 and has many executives from major car manufacturers such as BMW, Audi, and Opel. Its initial fundings came from the German government, while other sources came from private investors in China, Germany, and Sweden.

ACM’s first cars began testing in 2017 in prototype form. The final design is ready to debut at the IAA Mobility event. The company claims that initial production will begin in 2023, while mass production is expected to take place in 2024.

ACM City One is a compact electric vehicle with dimensions of 3.6 x 1.65 x 1.67 meters, and weighs 950 kg. This makes it a regular European A-segment car and not a quadricycle like the Renault Twizy and Citroën Ami. While the vehicle classification remains uncertain, ACM will likely have to comply with crash and safety testing regulations that are not required for heavy-duty four-wheelers.

The car is equipped with an electric motor that produces 34 horsepower, allowing it to reach a maximum speed of 110 km/h. Interestingly, the 24 kWh battery pack is replaceable. Four battery suitcases with a capacity of 2.5 kWh each are placed under the trunk and can be quickly replaced with fully charged units in just 3 minutes.

Quick battery swapping keeps the vehicle going for longer periods of time. After every trip, a full charge will take 5 hours from a station charger and up to 8 hours for a home outlet. In addition, the car can optionally be equipped with an additional battery box on the roof, thereby increasing the maximum travel distance from the standard 240 km to 360 km.

Inside, ACM City One has a spartan dashboard with a large touch screen, circular air vents, physical control buttons on the center console, and several storage compartments. The cabin can fit up to 5 adults, with a large 400-liter trunk.

By folding the rear seats, this car transforms into a commercial vehicle that offers:

  • Flat loading surface
  • Metal bulkhead
  • 1,450 liters of space
  • Maximum cargo weight of 380 kg

If you use the City One as a van, you can add body panels to the rear windows, and a 40-inch screen on the tailgate to display ads on the go.

ACM City One is focused on fleet buyers as it can be used as a rental car, taxi, or commercial vehicle. However, the company is also planning to offer it to private buyers. Prices will be ranging from 10,000 – 15,000 euros (about 268 – 402 million VND) depending on the equipment. This will make it a direct competitor to the Dacia Spring, one of the most affordable electric models in the world.

ACM claims that it has secured more than 208,000 orders for City One with a potential value in excess of €3 billion, although production will not begin before 2023.
