12 Aug 2023

From the second half of 2023 to the beginning of 2024, models such as Toyota Yaris Cross, Omoda 5, Mitsubishi Xforce… will respectively launch, competing with Kia Seltos, Hyundai Creta.

The B-size Compact Urban Vehicle (CUV) segment is witnessing remarkable growth in recent years, driven by its compact size, versatility, and affordability, which appeals particularly to young customers and first-time car buyers. This trend is set to continue as more models in this segment are poised to enter the Vietnamese market, offering consumers a wider range of choices.

Here’s a preview of the upcoming B-size high-rise cars set to be available in Vietnam:

Toyota, a dominant player in the small car segment, is introducing the Yaris Cross to further bolster its market share. While the Raize and Corolla Cross have been successful, the Yaris Cross is expected to tap into the untapped potential of the B-sized CUV segment.

The Yaris Cross, imported from Indonesia, is slated to come with two engine options: a 1.5-liter gasoline engine and a hybrid variant combining the gasoline engine with an electric motor. Dealers estimate the selling price to be around 700 million VND. Toyota Vietnam plans to launch the Yaris Cross in August. Built on the platform of Toyota subsidiary Daihatsu, the Yaris Cross is slightly smaller than its rival, the Hyundai Creta, but boasts a longer wheelbase.

Mitsubishi Xforce

The Mitsubishi Xforce, a commercial version of the XFC concept, is set to make its way into the Vietnamese market in the first quarter of 2024. Replacing the discontinued Outlander Sport, the Xforce aims to replicate the success of the Xpander.

Expected to arrive with three versions, all equipped with a 1.5-liter engine producing 105 horsepower and 141 Nm of torque, coupled with a CVT gearbox and front-wheel drive system. Notably, the Xforce will offer four driving modes tailored for different road conditions. Dealers are accepting deposits for the Xforce, with an anticipated price of around 700 million VND.

Omoda 5

Following customer test drives and refinements, Omoda 5 and other models under the parent brand Chery are slated for an early 2024 launch in Vietnam, primarily imported from Indonesia.

Chery aims to offer the Omoda 5 with a slightly more advanced set of features compared to its B-sized rivals, addressing the challenges faced by lesser-known brands in the Vietnamese market. The car’s price is projected to range between 600-700 million VND. Two versions are expected: a 1.5 Turbo front-wheel drive with a CVT gearbox, and a 1.6 Turbo all-wheel drive with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.

VinFast VF 6

Vietnamese carmaker VinFast introduced the VF 6 in July 2023, marking the only pure electric B-size CUV model in the segment. With an impressive range of 388 km for the Eco version and 399 km for the Plus variant, the VF 6 offers both efficient and eco-friendly mobility options.

Powered by a 59.6 kWh battery pack and an electric motor on the front axle, the VF 6 produces up to 201 horsepower and 310 Nm of torque in the Plus version. It boasts compact dimensions and a substantial wheelbase, making it a notable contender in the B-segment CUV market.

As the B-size CUV segment gains momentum in Vietnam, these upcoming models are poised to offer diverse choices for consumers seeking a compact and versatile urban vehicle.
