GAC Aion LX Plus leaked – Electric car with impressive 1,008 km range

GAC Aion LX Plus promises to be an electric model to dispel customers’ worries of operating range.

The range of travel per full battery charge is currently a concern for many electric vehicle buyers. To solve this problem, manufacturers are increasingly releasing new models with larger batteries, better-optimized to provide a longer travel range. Joining the trend, Chinese car manufacturer GAC has unveiled a new electric car model called Aion LX Plus with a range of up to 1,008 km according to the NEDC cycle.

To achieve this impressive number, the GAC Aion LX Plus is equipped with a 144.4 kWh battery pack. For comparison, the Tesla Model 3 is currently using a 75 kWh battery pack, while luxury electric car Lucid Air is employing 112.5 kWh. Thus, we can easily see that the battery pack of the Aion LX Plus is much larger than others’.

However, it should also be noted that US electric vehicle models often calculate the range of travel according to EPA cycles, which is said to be more accurate than NEDC (used by China) or even WLTP (worldwide). In other words, the car’s 1,008 km NEDC range will in fact be less than the 834 km Lucid Air delivered in EPA tests.

Peter Rawlinson, CEO of Lucid Motors, has said that creating a larger battery pack to provide a longer range is an unwise strategy. That seems to be the case for the GAC Aion LX Plus. To accommodate a larger battery pack, instead of the 4.79-meter length like the regular Aion LX, the Plus version is 5 cm longer at 4.84 m. However, this additional length doesn’t make it clear how big the new battery pack is, but the weight is clearly different.

Compared to 2,180 kg of the Aion LX, the Plus version weighs up to 2,720 kg, deviating more than half a ton for an already heavy vehicle. This huge change factor will definitely have an effect on the performance of the Chinese electric SUV. According to the manufacturer, the new car will be equipped with a powerful electric motor of 241 horsepower and can reach a maximum speed of 170 km / h.

GAC Aion LX Plus will be officially launched at the 2021 Guangzhou Auto Show, which begins next weekend. The Chinese automaker will release more details about the car during the event.
