Honda City dominates the Thailand market

The best-selling B-sized sedan in Thailand for the first 10 years of 2021 is Honda City.

Trái với Việt Nam, Honda City mới là vua phân khúc tại thị trường Thái Lan

For many years, B-sized sedans have remained one of the most popular car segments in Vietnam. Toyota Vios is often the leading model both in the segment and the whole Vietnamese market in terms of sales. Contrary to the Vietnamese market, Thai consumers prefer another Japanese model. Instead, the best-selling B-size sedan in Thailand in the first 10 months of this year is Honda City.

Accordingly, from January to October 2021, Honda has sold a total of 18,249 City units to Thai customers, accounting for 26.4% of the market share. The corresponding number of Honda City in Vietnam in the first 10 months of this year is only 6,999 vehicles.

The second place belongs to Toyota Yaris Ativ with 15,258 units sold, accounting for 22.1% market share. This is also a B-sized sedan that looks quite similar to Toyota Vios currently sold in Vietnam. Meanwhile, Toyota Vios in Vietnam has an accumulated sales in the same period of 14,394 units.

Third place belongs to Nissan Almera – another Japanese model. This model brought in sales of 12,653 units in the first 10 months, equivalent to 18.3% market share.

The remaining 5 positions in the B-segment sedan segment in Thailand include Mazda2 (10,032 units, 14.5% market share), Mitsubishi Attrage (4,508 units, 6.5% market share), MG5 (3,362 units, 4.9% market share), Toyota Vios (3,065 units, 4.4% market share) and Suzuki Ciaz (1,928 units, 2.8% market share). It should be added that the Toyota Vios in Thailand has the same design as the car sold in the Chinese market a few years ago.

The most surprising model in the segment is the MG5. This is a new B-size sedan that returned to the Thai market in July this year after a 2-year absence. Although it has only been sold for 3 months, the MG5 has surpassed even familiar faces such as Toyota Vios and Suzuki Ciaz. Keeping this momentum, MG5 can completely enter the top 3 best-selling segment in the near future.

In total, for the first 10 months of 2021, Thai customers have consumed 69,058 B-size sedans. Through the above sales table, it can be seen that the B-segment sedan segment in Thailand is completely absent of Korean models like Hyundai Accent or Kia Soluto. In other words, this segment in Vietnam is somewhat more diverse, and in the near future there will also be the presence of MG5. Earlier this month, the MG5 was caught at a registration station in Vietnam, proving that the launch date is around the corner.
