Hyundai Mobis (a subsidiary of Hyundai Development) recently released more videos showing the versatility of the Ioniq 5 prototype thanks to the e-Corner system.

Specifically, with the e-Corner system, each wheel will be an independently capable drive cluster, which contains a motor that impacts directly on each wheel. Each tire contains a sensor (Tire Guard) to regulate pressure.

In addition, the e-Corner also integrates electronic braking and steering technology as well as electric shock absorbers into a single package. Therefore, this system can be equipped to cars without wheel-driven internal combustion engine, conventional chassis design or even a steering column.

When equipped with the e-Corner system, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 electric car in the test can not only move sideways like a crab, but can also turn in place, rotate like a compass, and go diagonally. According to Hyundai, the e-Corner system is made for hybrid-electric vehicles (HEVs), electric batteries (BEVs) and electric fuel cells (FCEVs).

This technology has been revealed by the Korean automaker since 2018. However, Hyundai Mobis has not confirmed that it will bring the e-Corner to commercial models.
