Hyundai KONA petrol engine is dead in the Indonesian market

14 Jul 2021

The Hyundai KONA model was officially discontinued in the Indonesian market after two years of presence.

After more than two years of opening for sale, the petrol engine Hyundai KONA was officially “killed” in the Indonesian market due to too low sales. In recent months, Hyundai Motors Indonesia has stopped distributing the petrol version KONA. At the same time, on the company’s official website, there is only information about the electric KONA version and other models such as Santa Fe, Palisade…

Hyundai KONA 2.0L petrol engine version was introduced in this market through the Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS) in April 2019. This model has only one version, priced at 363.9 million rupiahs, equivalent to 573.6 million, is expected to compete with Mazda CX-3, Honda HR-V in the 5-seater SUV segment.

The reason why Hyundai Motors Indonesia decided to “death” this model was because sales were too low. Each year, the KONA gasoline engine delivers less than 150 vehicles to customers. Specifically, in 2019 KONA only sold 119 cars, in 2020 even the company only sold 77 cars. After more than a year of launching the gasoline engine version, Hyundai Motors Indonesia continues to launch the all-electric KONA EV to the market. After only two months, KONA EV reached sales of 38 vehicles.

In the first 5 months of 2021, only 7 units of Hyundai KONA gasoline engines were sold on the market, while sales of the KONA EV version reached 215 units. Thus, after two years of opening for sale, the total sales of the gasoline-powered KONA version reached only 203 units, while it took only 8 months for the electric KONA to sell 253 vehicles. This is one of the reasons why the gasoline engine KONA was “death”, making way for an all-electric version.

In Vietnam, Hyundai KONA has been assembled and distributed by TC Motor since August 2018. In the first two years, the model continued to grow in sales. However, from the end of 2020 until now, KONA is showing signs of slowing down when letting Kia Seltos or Toyota Corolla Cross surpass it. Even after a month of launch, the “rookie” Mazda CX-3 was surprised when it sold better than KONA in the segment in May 2021.
