Mazda CX-50 2022 officially launched as an off-road version of the new CX-5

The Mazda CX-50 2022 is designed as an off-road vehicle without sacrificing street performance.

On November 15, 2021, Mazda officially unveiled a new C-sized crossover model called CX-50. True to previous information, the Mazda CX-50 2022 is not a model born to replace the CX-5. Instead, this is a new version to expand Mazda’s crossover lineup in the US market.

Contrary to initial predictions, the Mazda CX-50 2022 does not have a more stylish coupe-like SUV design than the CX-5. It is designed in a more aggressive off-road style. According to Mazda, the CX-50 is to be an off-road vehicle without sacrificing street performance.

According to Dave Coleman, director of Mazda NA, the company does not want to get too deep into off-road technology when designing the new model. In his research, most outdoor trips consist of hundreds of kilometers on asphalt and only a few tens of kilometers off-road. Therefore, Mazda focused on designing a car that could run on any terrain. This is why Mazda CX-50 2022 has an off-road mode but not a specific terrain mode. Unlike other models, the new car does not offer driving modes such as Sand (sand), Gravel (gravel), or Snow (snow).

Outside, the Mazda CX-50 2022 still applies the typical “Kodo” design language of the Japanese brand. On the front of the car, this crossover is equipped with a black grille. Even the edge of the grille is painted in glossy black and connected to the headlights on both sides.

Below is the vertical air vent at the two front corners of the car and two horizontal light strips on the front bumper. In addition, the car has a silver chassis, bringing a more aggressive design to the Mazda CX-50 2022.

Round to the side, we will encounter a new wheel cavity, with a more square design for the 2022 version. Inside this wheel, the cavity is a set of rims with a 6-spoke dual-spoke design, painted in 2 sportier colors.

At the back, the Mazda CX-50 2022 also has some changes compared to the CX-5 such as the taillights and 2 vertical air vents at the two rear corners, similar on the front of the car. In addition, the Mazda CX -50 2022 is also equipped with 2 circular exhaust pipes, integrated into the silver underbody panel below the rear bumper.

If desired, customers buying the CX-50 2022 can install a reinforced roof bagage to increase the vehicle’s versatility. In addition, the new Zircon Sand yellow exterior paint is quite suitable for the car.

Stepping inside the Mazda CX-50 2022, US customers will encounter an interior space that focuses on the driver and comes with high-quality materials. And yet, the car is also equipped with “modern outdoor” seats that are not found in any Mazda brand products. Next is the Terracotta interior color and the panoramic sunroof. To increase practicality, Mazda has improved the storage compartments and added cup holders for this model.

Underneath the hood of the model are 2 engine options. The first is a 4-cylinder petrol engine block, naturally aspirated, 2.5L capacity, producing a maximum capacity of 187 horsepower and maximum torque of 252 Nm. The second is a 4-cylinder, turbocharged, 2.5-liter gasoline engine with a maximum capacity of 250 horsepower and maximum torque of 434 Nm. According to Mazda, in the near future, the CX-50 2022 will have a hybrid version as well.

Both engines are paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and a full-time 4-wheel drive system. In addition, the car also has a new Mi-Drive system, allowing the driver to choose 3 driving modes, including Normal, Sport, and Off-Road.

Currently, the price of the Mazda CX-50 2022 in the US market has not been announced. The car is expected to be on the market by the end of next year.
