A series of Mercedes sedan and SUV cars have been recalled since the propeller in the fuel pump can deform, causing the pump to fail and the car to stall.
Mercedes is conducting a recall of over 143,000 sedans and SUVs shipped between 2021 and 2023, including C-class, E-class, S-class, CLS and GT sedans; coupe SL; SUV GLC, GLE, GLS, G-class.
The German automaker informed that the engines of models subject to the recall could be shut down suddenly during operation, endangering drivers and passengers. The fault mainly comes from the fuel pump assembly, causing the engine to have a sluggish condition, floating the “goldfish” symbol (engine error message) on the display.
The faulty fuel pump assembly, supplied by Hyundam Industrial, uses impellers that do not meet required specifications. Therefore, the blades can be deformed, colliding with the fuel pump wall, causing the pump to be turned off.
In documents provided to the U.S. Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Mercedes said it received 2,031 of warranty claims and customer complaints related to the issue. However, there has no accidents or injuries yet recorded by the company.
Mercedes said dealers will offer free fuel pump replacements for the recalled vehicles.
