Due to fraud in safety testing, Toyota’s low-cost models are temporarily suspended, including the new generation Wigo.

Daihatsu – a subsidiary of Japanese automaker – Toyota has confirmed that they have some “violations” in safety crash tests conducted on 4 models. Specifically, these include the Perodua Axia 2023, Toyota Vios (also known as Yaris Ativ in Thailand and other markets), Toyota Agya (also known in some markets as Toyota Wigo) and a yet-to-be-released model.

In a statement, Daihatsu acknowledged that more than 88,000 affected models were sold in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Mexico. New shipments have now been suspended.

Meanwhile, parent company Toyota Japan has issued heavy criticism over the issue.

“Daihatsu’s misconduct is a safety-related issue, which is the most important aspect of the vehicle. We consider this a completely unacceptable act that betrays the trust of our customers. Since this problem occurs with a Toyota passenger car, we believe that the problem is not limited to Daihatsu,” said Akio Toyoda, Chairman of the Toyota Board of Management.

It is known that Toyota Wigo 2023 is currently scheduled to launch the Vietnamese automobile market on May 24 and the car is fully imported from Indonesia. However, it is not clear whether the first batch of cars imported to the country belongs to the unsafe batch or not.

Meanwhile, the new upgraded Toyota Vios B-class sedan is expected to be launched in Vietnam on May 10, 2023. However, this is only an upgrade, not a new generation version with rigged safety test results.
