Outperformed by SUVs from its own brand, Hyundai Accent to be discontinued

The shift in the trends of American consumers caused sales of Hyundai Accent to drop significantly. The model is eventually discontinued.

Bị lép vế trước những mẫu SUV cùng thương hiệu, Hyundai Accent sẽ bị khai tử

In recent time, Hyundai has continuously been planning to cease production of many models such as Santro and Ioniq. Now, Hyundai has announced that it will stop producing the low-cost B-class sedan Accent in the US market.

Explaining this decision, Hyundai said the reason for the discontinuation of Accent was due to “expansion of the SUV product line”. This disappearance of the Accent will make the Venue the cheapest model of Hyundai in the US market.

Currently, Hyundai Accent has a starting price of $16,645 while the corresponding figure of the Venue is $19,000. The price difference between these two models can be clearly seen. However, the affordable price of Hyundai Accent is still not enough to attract customers because American consumers now prefer SUVs/crossovers.

The change in favour of American consumers has caused Hyundai Accent to lose sales markedly. In 2021, this B-class sedan achieved sales of 19,614 units while the corresponding figure in 2016 was 79,766 units. Even before the outbreak of Covid-19, specifically in 2019, Hyundai only sold 25,628 Accents to US consumers.

Contrary to the US, Hyundai Accent is still popular in some other markets such as Vietnam. In 2021, Hyundai Accent is TC Motor’s best-selling model with sales of 19,956 vehicles. Therefore, Hyundai is still developing a new generation of this B-class sedan.

“Sedans remain an important part of our product lineup and Hyundai will continue to sell the Elantra and Sonata” – Hyundai said in a statement. However, contrary to this statement, there are rumors that confirm the discontinuation of Hyundai Sonata in 2027 or 2028.

It is known that Accent is not the only model that is stopped by Hyundai in the US market. They also cut three others from the list, including Veloster N, Elantra N, and Kona N. Previously, it was reported that Hyundai would stop selling versions ‘2.0’, ‘2.0 Premium’, ‘R -Spec’, ‘Turbo’, and ‘Ultimate’ of the Veloster in the US market this year. That Veloster N is removed means the entire Hyundai Veloster product line will disappear from this market.

After said changes, remaining in the US market are Venue, Kona, Tucson, Santa Cruz, Santa Fe, Palisade, Ioniq 5, Nexo, Elantra, and Sonata.

In Vietnam, in June, Hyundai also stopped selling the Kona B-class SUV. The position of this model has been replaced by Creta 2022.
