The trend of tech-based driving services converting to electric motorbikes

23 Apr 2022

Thanks to the early switch to electric motorbikes, many tech-based drivers are relieved of the effects of current pandemic season and high gasoline prices.

Rising trend of turning to electric motorbikes

Gasoline prices have been increasing continuously. There are times when it exceeds 30,000 VND/liter, creating great pressure directly on jobs that are associated with transport. The lowered income makes many drivers come up with ways to reduce operating costs. In which, the option of converting gas-based motorbikes to electric is considered by many as a viable option.

In a social networking forum, the number of questions related to the experience of converting and operating electric motorbikes has become the hottest topic in recent weeks. On many other forums, such questions also quickly received many positive responses from other experienced drivers. Most believe that using an electric motorbike is the right thing to do, provided enough knowledge.

Ngoc Tu, a tech-based delivery driver with an electric motorbike, said: “I’ve been using electric motorbikes to ship for 3 years now, and it is good! At first, it was not very familiar because electric motorbikes required more calculations, especially locating battery exchange, battery rental, and charging stations. Currently, the best and most effective use is still the VinFast electric motorbike.”

Not only on social networking forums, the electric motorbike market is also in an excited state. Many dealers and showrooms have recorded a recent increase in customer interest in electric motorcycles.

An employee of a shop selling motorbikes and electric bicycles on Hue Street (Hanoi) said that since the Lunar New Year, demand has increased, causing the shop to often fall into situations which there were no vehicles to deliver in time. “About 3 weeks ago, customers came to see and learn about electric motorbikes nearly doubled, especially when gasoline prices announced a sharp increase, we had to hire more staff for customer service” – said the employee.

VinFast’s representative also said that sales of electric motorbikes of the company increased sharply after Tet. On average, about 15,000 motorbikes were sold per month, 3 times higher than the same period last year.

In the discussion about changing gasoline motorbikes to electric, VinFast became a hot commodity because they meet many criteria of tech-based drivers.

According to Mr. Ngoc Tu, in order to choose the most effective electric motorbike, it must be based on the criteria of production quality, durability, operability, and methods of charging/changing batteries that must be diverse and convenient. These are prerequisites for electric motorcycles to operate with high frequency and continuously during the day. Except for VinFast, currently, there is no electric motorcycle company in the market that has such diverse and large-scale ecosystem dedicated to electric motorcycles.

Most drivers using electric motorbikes today serve the purpose of delivering goods with fixed routes and travel about 100-120km/day. Ms. Nguyen Thu Ngan, an experienced driver using VinFast’s Feliz, said that if calculated carefully and planned ahead, electric motorbikes can save millions of VND per month compared to running a gas-based vehicle, increasing income for drivers.

“I deliver about 150km/day. Every morning, I run until noon to rest for lunch, then plug in the charger, then again in the afternoon. If I used to run for 100km and had to pay nearly 70,000 VND per, it only costs about 10,000 VND for charging now. Every month, I pay 220,000 more to rent the battery. For the gas-based motorbike, I had to worry about oil and grease, damage, and I couldn’t calculate how much it would have cost because I never knew when it would fail” – Ngan shared.

“The cost for an electric motorbike to operate 100km is only about 6,900 VND if charged at home. On the way, you can go to VinFast’s charging stations, the price of each electricity unit is about 2,820 VND/unit without VAT, or go to 3S repair shops or showrooms to change batteries, costing 25,000 VND/battery. In addition to convenience, running an electric motorbike with pre-calculations will optimize costs and be more profitable than gasoline motorbikes”, said Mr. Thang, a Be driver sharing his experience.

Not only interested in cost, usability is what drivers are most interested in when learning about electric motorcycles. The IP67 waterproof feature is the most loved by many. “From the moment I switched to an electric motorbike, I felt happy. I ran through 2 rainy seasons, facing floods comfortably. Every time it rains, I like it, the driving fee increases, I receive all the bills. There were days I called the rescue to change the battery to save money to keep running. Then I came come home, still profitable”, said Manh, a delivery driver in Ho Chi Minh City, praising the water resistance of VinFast electric motorbikes.

In addition, the finishing quality and engine power, as well as price are also what many new drivers are interested in. Most of VinFast’s electric motorcycle models are considered to have good finishing quality as well as equipped with the most powerful engine that are superior to gasoline motorcycle models in their segment.
