The upcoming Suzuki Jimny in Vietnam is leading the sales of the global small SUV segment

02 Jul 2021

Thanks to the design “similar to” Mercedes-Benz G-Class and really good off-road ability, Suzuki Jimny has excellently become the best-selling A-class SUV in the world.

According to a report, the A-segment SUV segment sold a total of about 125,800 units worldwide in 2020, of which, Suzuki Jimny’s sales were about 83,000 vehicles, accounting for more than half of the global sales market share and up 20% compared to 2019.

In second place is the classic Lada Niva Legend model with 30,000 units sold in 2020, down 17% compared to 2019. The 3rd place belongs to Mahindra Thar with sales of 5,500 units, up 39% compared to 2019.

In recent years, the A-class SUV segment has gradually become “quiet”, and the appearance of Suzuki Jimny has helped this market become more bustling. The sub “G-Class” is loved by customers around the world thanks to its squarish boxy design, impressive off-road ability and reasonable price.

However, Suzuki Jimny is currently facing a shortage of supplies because of the global shortage of semiconductor chips. That’s why in Australia and Japan, many used Jimnys are being resold for more than the factory price.

In this situation, it is not clear whether Suzuki Vietnam can launch Jimny according to the original plan or not. From the beginning of June this year, there have been many sources saying that Suzuki Jimny will be introduced in the Vietnamese market in October 2021. At that time, a few batches of Suzuki Jimny cars imported from India had arrived at the domestic seaport but could not be cleared.

Suzuki Jimny has actually been present in our country since last year with the number of a few units. All of these are imported privately and have a high selling price, ranging about 1.5 billion VND for cars imported from Germany.

In the case of genuine sale, the selling price of Suzuki Jimny is expected to decrease significantly with the origin imported from India, the selling price is expected to be less than 700 million VND.

If there is a good price combined with the available love from domestic users, Suzuki Jimny may become a new phenomenon in the domestic car village, boosting sales and becoming the product leader of Suzuki Vietnam.
