On October 3, a series of car manufacturers in the US announced the sales results of the first 3 quarters. Accordingly, General Motors (GM) sold 555,580 vehicles, up by 24% over the same period in 2021. Toyota sold 526,017 vehicles, down by 7.1%. This is also the second quarter that GM surpassed its Japanese competitor in terms of sales.

In all three quarters, GM sold more than 1,650,000 vehicles, nearly 80,000 more than Toyota’s 1,572,000. As such, the American car company now holds the best-selling position in its home country after a year of losing its place.

In 2021, when Toyota sells more cars than GM in the United States, it was also the first time in 90 years that GM had lost the title of best-seller since beating Ford in 1931.

Toyota’s achievement last year came after supply chain disruptions, especially chip shortages, which hit GM’s output heavily.

GM says its improved access to chips has helped it increase production. “Supply chain disruptions are not completely over yet, but we expect to continue to outperform 2021 in terms of production levels, particularly in the second quarter of this year,” said Steve Carlisle, president of GM North America.

GM is one of the few major automakers to record quarterly sales growth in a market that tends to slow down as customers tighten their belts in the face of rising bank interest rates and the cost of living.

Stellantis Group – which includes sub-brands such as Ram, Dodge, and Chrysler – said it sold nearly 386,000 vehicles in the third quarter of 2022, down by 6% from the same period in 2021. Honda also decreased by nearly 36%. Ford sold 143,000 vehicles in the same period (-8.9%).

Hyundai – rapidly expanding its investment in the US – posted a modest increase of 3% in the third quarter, and this was their best quarter with good results.
