On May 18, the renowned Japanese automaker introduced the highly anticipated new generation of the Tacoma, its mid-size pickup truck model. Toyota’s latest offering will go head-to-head with competitors such as the Ford Ranger and Chevrolet Colorado in the fiercely competitive US market.

Drawing design cues from its larger sibling, the Tundra, the new Tacoma retains the traditional truck characteristics that many rivals have abandoned, according to Toyota. The 2024 Tacoma boasts a compact grille and sleeker headlights. It offers different cabin configurations, including the XtraCab (2 doors) and Double Cab (4 doors). The Crew Cab variant, featuring ample rear seating, provides a choice between a 1.5-meter or 1.8-meter cargo bed. Notably, the cargo box of the new generation Tacoma offers a 7% increase in capacity and adds 12V and 120V sockets. The tailgate features electric opening and closing functions, an anti-jamming mechanism, and an integrated button on the rear light assembly.

Inside the vehicle, drivers will find a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14-inch touchscreen infotainment system, along with a head-up display (HUD) integrated into the steering wheel. Interior trims vary depending on the version.

Under the hood, the 2024 Tacoma comes equipped with a standard turbocharged 2.4-liter I4 engine, delivering 228 horsepower in the SR version and 278 horsepower in more advanced trims. Buyers have the option of a 6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic transmission.

Toyota also offers a new i-Force Max hybrid engine option, delivering 326 horsepower and a maximum torque of 630 Nm, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The i-Force Max engine comes as standard on the Tacoma TRD Pro and Trailhunter models.

The 2024 Tacoma features rear-wheel drive as standard, with a limited-slip differential. Optional configurations include two-wheel drive with active traction control and a limited-slip differential. The Limited trims and vehicles equipped with the i-Force Max engine come standard with all-wheel drive and a locking center differential. Meanwhile, the TRD PreRunner, TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter versions feature an electronic rear differential lock.

Built on the TNGA-F architecture, shared with the Tundra and Sequoia, the next-generation Tacoma boasts a new platform. The vehicle utilizes a high-strength steel ladder frame with laser welds, reinforced crossbars, and a new front crossbar for the steering system.

The SR, SR5 XtraCab, and TRD PreRunner versions come with traditional leaf spring suspension, while the high-end trims feature a multi-link coil spring rear suspension. All models are equipped with disc brakes on all four wheels and an electric power steering system.

Safety is a top priority in the Tacoma 2024, which includes the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 package. This comprehensive suite of safety features comprises dynamic radar cruise control, lane-keeping assist, pre-collision warning with automatic braking for pedestrian detection, adaptive automatic headlights, traffic sign recognition, and active driver assistance.

Toyota plans to start selling the Tacoma 2024 at the end of 2023, with deliveries expected to commence in early 2024. Pricing details will be announced closer to the launch date.
