BMW iFace grew out of a collaboration between BMW Motorrad and Professor Gerhard Lesjoh, head of the University of Munich Eye Institute, Germany. iFace allows recognizing the driver’s face and comparing the iris and cornea for recognition.

Facial recognition uses the latest 3D technology integrated on the car’s TFT instrument cluster and cannot be seen from the outside. The technology applies the stripe scanning method used in reverse engineering for many years. After the rider removes the helmet, the face is scanned in three dimensions and compared with biometric data.

If the data matches, the system unlocks, and the driver can start the engine. Face recognition is also usable in the dark because 3D scanning works in conjunction with infrared scanning.

The BMW iFace works as a dual system to achieve the highest level of comfort and safety. For example, riders can be authenticated by using facial recognition when not wearing a helmet or by scanning the iris-cornea of the eye. This type of authentication allows the system to identify the operator even while wearing a helmet.

Infrared technology ensures functionality reliability even in the dark. In addition, a special polarizing filter allows the scanning process to penetrate the glasses of helmets and various contact lenses.

The BMW iFace is scheduled to make its global debut at the end of 2023 at Europe’s largest motorcycle show. The German automaker said that BMW iFace will be equipped on boxer motorcycles.
