Motorbike dealers report low stocks and increase prices despite abundant supply

06 Nov 2022

Although the number of domestically produced motorbikes in the past 3 months has increased significantly, supplementing the previous shortage, the price of some models has not decreased but increased.

The report of the General Statistics Office has just been released showing that, in October, the whole country was estimated to have 308,000 motorcycles shipped, a slight decrease of 12% compared to September (347,200 units) and equal to 125.4 % over the same period in 2021.

In total, in the first 10 months of 2022, the output of newly manufactured motorcycles reached 2,608,000 units, a significant increase compared to the same period last year reaching 2,295,300 units. This number is even higher than the motorbike consumption of the whole market in 2021 (with 2.49 million vehicles according to the report of the Vietnam Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers – VAMM).

Although motorcycle production has been reported to increase sharply in the past 3 consecutive months, it is currently recorded that there are still some “hot” models that are reported to be out of stock by dealers, leading to a high price difference compared to the listed price.

Specifically, Honda SH, SH Mode, and Vision all increased their prices by 5-10 million VND compared to the previous month, the highest difference was up to 20-28 million VND. Even a model that is rarely increased in price like Yamaha Grande currently has a difference of up to 4 million VND compared to the proposed price of the company.

Previously, the Vietnam Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers (VAMM), including 5 members: Honda Vietnam Company, Vietnam Piaggio Company, Vietnam Suzuki Company, SYM Vietnam Company and Yamaha Company Motor Vietnam also announced the sales of the third quarter of 2022 (from July to the end of September 2022) of 762,154 vehicles. If compared to the same period in 2021, when the market was frozen because of the epidemic and distance, sales increased by more than 200%.

It can be seen that the production and consumption of motorcycles are showing signs of increasing again, but the story of selling more expensive motorbikes is almost impossible to end soon, especially when the market enters the year-end shopping season.
